James Biddle

EMS Pilot/ Base Aviation Manager

James “Jim” Biddle is a Pilot and Base Aviation Manager with Med-Trans Corp / Regional One in Spartanburg, South Carolina. During a distinguished 42-year aviation career, Jim has combined exceptional skill and leadership with a commitment to safely serving patients, families, and flight crews.

Jim demonstrated those qualities during the response to a child who was critically injured after being struck by a truck while riding a bicycle. With a landing zone established at the scene, Jim ensured a rapid launch and maintained clear communication regarding scene safety as the flight crew prepared to transport the young patient to definitive care.

Recognizing the emotional needs of the family as well as the urgency of the child’s condition, Jim made the important decision to allow the child’s father to accompany the patient aboard the aircraft to the trauma center. That act gave a frightened parent the opportunity to remain close to his child during an unimaginably difficult experience and demonstrated the compassion that complements Jim’s aviation expertise.

Jim has safely completed more than 2,300 patient transports during his 18.5 years with Med-Trans. His aviation career began in the U.S. Army as a CH-47 helicopter mechanic before he advanced through the Warrant Officer program and became a pilot. During 17 years serving in Cavalry squadrons, he flew Cobra and Kiowa Warrior helicopters and participated in initial reconnaissance missions at the outset of both Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Jim retired from military service as a CW4 Master Aviator. His military honors include a Bronze Star, three Meritorious Service Medals, and an Air Medal with Valor. The discipline, judgment, and leadership developed throughout that career continue to guide his work in air medical transport.

From military aviation to thousands of patient transports, Jim’s career reflects a lifetime of service and responsibility for those entrusted to his care. His leadership during the transport of a critically injured child demonstrated that exceptional air medical service requires not only aviation expertise and sound decision-making, but also compassion for the families experiencing their most difficult moments. MTC/Regional One is proud to recognize Pilot and Base Aviation Manager James “Jim” Biddle as a Star of Life.

Matthew Lonon

Flight Paramedic

Matthew Lonon is a Flight Paramedic with Med-Trans Corp/Regional One in Spartanburg, South Carolina, whose clinical judgment and lifesaving critical care made a profound difference for a critically injured child.

Matthew responded as part of the flight crew caring for a child who had been struck by a vehicle and sustained a traumatic brain injury, multiple fractures, and severe lacerations. Recognizing the severity of the child’s injuries and the urgent need for definitive care, Matthew and his crew made the critical decision to “load and go.”

Rather than delay transport to perform extensive stabilization on scene, the team rapidly loaded the young patient into the aircraft and departed for the receiving facility. Once airborne, Matthew and his team delivered advanced critical care throughout the flight, providing the interventions the child needed while moving quickly toward definitive treatment.

The response demonstrated the importance of sound clinical judgment in critical care transport. Faced with a severely injured pediatric patient, Matthew and his crew balanced the need for immediate medical intervention with the urgency of reaching a higher level of care. Their ability to make that decision quickly and provide advanced treatment during transport proved pivotal to the child’s survival.

The impact of their care continues to resonate with the patient’s family. Today, they credit Matthew and his crew with helping give their loved one the opportunity to celebrate another birthday—a powerful reminder of the lasting difference EMS professionals can make in a single critical moment.

Matthew’s clinical skill, decisive action, and commitment to his patient exemplify the very best of critical care transport. MTC/Regional One is proud to recognize Flight Paramedic Matthew Lonon as a Star of Life.
