Daniel Rooney
Daniel Rooney began his EMS career as an EMT in 2005 and has since become the kind of professional every provider should strive to emulate. His selfless dedication to his patients, colleagues, and community is unmatched.
Dan joined Maricopa Ambulance in October 2019 as an eager and determined EMT. From the beginning, he stood out for his strong desire to learn, often seeking opportunities to collaborate with Paramedics and to deepen his knowledge. His passion and drive quickly earned him a spot in the Maricopa Ambulance Paramedic Cohort Program, and in 2022, he proudly achieved his Paramedic certification.
Since then, Dan has embraced his natural calling as a leader. He served two years as a union trustee with IAFF Local I-60. He completed the Maricopa Ambulance Field Training Officer Academy, mentoring the next generation of EMS providers with the same dedication and professionalism that has defined his own career.
Daniel’s leadership extends far beyond the ambulance. In 2023, he launched a holiday fundraising campaign for Phoenix Children’s Hospital’s Toyland Fund, raising more than $3,000 through his
passion and determination. The following year, Daniel expanded the effort by organizing a community-wide charity Pickleball tournament. The tournament, put on by the Local I60, brought
together 24 teams and raised more than $6,000 for the cause. Going above and beyond, Daniel worked directly with hospital staff to identify specific toys most needed by patients and organized a
shopping trip with fellow EMS providers. Together, they filled nearly 20 carts with gifts and delivered holiday cheer directly to children at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Daniel’s vision and energy have inspired countless others in the EMS community to join the cause, ensuring this effort will continue to grow for years to come.
Equally inspiring is the fact that Daniel is also a devoted husband and father of four. The time and energy he has sacrificed from his own family to uplift others is a true testament to his character and his commitment to the EMS mission.
Thomas Elliot Owen
For the past 14 years, Elliot Owen has dedicated himself to serving the people of Central Mississippi as a trusted and compassionate EMS professional. Beginning his career in 2011 as an EMT, he advanced to Paramedic the following year and has since served in multiple leadership roles, including preceptor, field training officer, and, most recently, field supervisor at Magnolia Ambulance. In each position, Elliot has not only cared for countless patients but also mentored and guided fellow EMS providers, helping shape the next generation of caregivers.
Elliot’s commitment to service extends well beyond his shifts. He invests his time coaching Little League, assisting neighbors with projects, and serving children and families in his church community. His dedication to others was powerfully demonstrated during a family vacation, when he and a friend noticed a swimmer face down and unconscious in deep water. Without hesitation, Elliot swam out, pulled the stranger to shore, and initiated life-saving CPR until 911 crews arrived. Thanks to his quick actions, that individual is alive today.
Elliot embodies the courage, compassion, and professionalism that define a Star of Life. His devotion to his patients, colleagues, and community makes him an extraordinary representative of the EMS profession.
Daniel Norfleet
Daniel Norfleet is a respected leader within First Call Ambulance and the broader EMS community. With decades of dedicated service, he has earned a reputation for experience, knowledge, and reliability, always making himself available when his team and community need him most.
Daniel began his EMS career in 1986 as a volunteer first responder in his local community, an experience that ignited his passion for service. He advanced through the ranks from EMT-Basic to Advanced EMT and ultimately Paramedic, all while pursuing higher education. He continues to champion lifelong learning for himself and his colleagues to ensure that his team provides the highest quality prehospital care. Daniel holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Health along with numerous instructor qualifications and certifications.
Widely admired by colleagues and partnering agencies alike, Daniel has earned the trust of law enforcement, the sheriff’s office, medical centers, and county leaders. His collaborative approach has strengthened interagency relationships and elevated the standard of emergency medical services in his county.
In addition to his clinical expertise, Daniel’s leadership shines through his ability to foster communication, teamwork, and a shared focus on patient-centered care. His efforts ensure that every call is supported not only by EMS but also by an entire network of public safety and healthcare partners working in unison.

Connor Holt
Although serving part-time as a paramedic with Shoals Ambulance, Connor Holt’s influence reaches far beyond his scheduled shifts. Recognizing the importance of strong clinical development, Connor voluntarily took on the role of training assistant, dedicating countless hours to mentoring, educating, and supporting his peers.
Driven by a vision to elevate the standards of EMS across Alabama, Connor instructs for the City of Bessemer Fire Department, GoRescue EMS Academy, and Shoals Ambulance, while also volunteering with Eden Technical Career Center. His commitment to personal growth aligns with his passion for education, as he continually pursues advanced certifications to expand his expertise and share that knowledge with others.
Connor’s dedication has raised the level of clinical competence throughout the state, creating a ripple effect of improved skills, training, and patient care that extends far beyond his home service. He exemplifies the spirit of EMS through his initiative, professionalism, and commitment to making the world around him safer and stronger.
Carol Harper
As an administrative assistant at Frontier Ambulance, Carol Harper has become a driving force in the role of community relations and outreach in building stronger connections between EMS, Fremont County, Wyoming, and the Wind River Reservation community. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by trauma victims, Carol partnered with Tribal Victim Services, Local Victim Services, and Frontier EMTs to create a safe space where individuals can seek help and access resources to begin rebuilding their lives.
Carol has also been an advocate for addressing the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) as the Project & Outreach Coordinator for MMIP Wind River. She was instrumental in bringing the Department of Homeland Security’s Blue Campaign on Human Trafficking to Frontier’s Riverton and Lander stations, ensuring EMS crews, law enforcement, and search and rescue agencies received critical training on how to identify warning signs and respond appropriately, knowledge especially vital given the higher risks faced by Native American populations.
Additionally, Carol collaborates closely with the American Red Cross of Wyoming as the Relationship Management DCS Community Partnership Lead to enhance disaster preparedness in Fremont County, working with FEMA and city government in developing an effective Emergency Management Plan. She also works with local veteran organizations to coordinate the Veterans Day Parade and assists and supports local veteran events and activities. She is the mother of two U.S. Marines, and her son is an OIF veteran.
Carol regularly attends training courses to expand her skills and share best practices with her community, including Suicide Prevention and Mental Health First Aid. A passionate supporter of EMS, Carol believes strongly in advancing the role of EMS as an essential service in Wyoming. Through her efforts to foster partnerships, expand awareness, access critical resources, and champion preparedness, Carol is helping ensure the best possible outcomes for the patients and communities Frontier Ambulance serves.
Alex Gossett
Alex Gossett joined the Puckett EMS family in October 2014 as an EMT filled with compassion and a faithful servant’s heart. From the start, Alex quickly distinguished himself through his strong work ethic, clinical skill, and dedicated commitment to patients. He earned his Paramedic license in 2016 and is currently pursuing a nursing degree, further expanding his ability to serve others.
Alex has received numerous commendations for his outstanding customer service and is well-known among colleagues and patients alike for his infectious smile and positive presence. A respected paramedic and trusted preceptor, Alex is recognized for his exceptional decision-making in critical moments and his ability to guide newer paramedics as they develop in the field.
Earlier this year, Alex’s expertise and leadership were on full display during two separate cardiac arrest events involving the same patient, occurring several weeks apart. On both occasions, he assumed command of patient care, skillfully directing resuscitation efforts that ultimately restored spontaneous respirations and pulse. Thanks to Alex’s relentless determination and clinical excellence, he successfully revived the same individual twice, with the patient going on to make a full recovery after both events—a powerful testament to the life-saving impact Alex brings to his community.
Outside of EMS, Alex is a devoted husband to his wife of 13 years and a proud father to their six-year-old son. He enjoys spending time outdoors, cycling off-road, and sharing his love of music by teaching guitar lessons. A man of strong faith, Alex plays guitar for his church band, further demonstrating his commitment to service and community.
Larry Christian
For more than five decades, Larry Christian has devoted his life to EMS and public service. With 52 years of continuous dedication, Larry embodies the true spirit of service, compassion, and commitment to community that defines the EMS profession.
Larry began his public service career in 1973 as a volunteer with the New Whiteland Volunteer Fire Department. In 1979, he earned his EMT certification through Johnson Memorial Hospital and soon after joined Meyers Ambulance in Johnson County, Indiana. His passion for serving others also led him to spend time as a reserve police officer in the mid-1980s, further broadening his contributions to public safety.
In 1998, Larry began working for Rural Metro when it acquired Meyers Ambulance. There, he expanded his EMS impact to one of Indiana’s most iconic venues, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. From 1998 through 2014, Larry provided EMS services at the track, helping ensure the safety of thousands of fans and participants at one of the world’s largest sporting events.
Within hours of Rural Metro announcing the closure of its Indianapolis operations in 2014, Randy Seals personally called Larry to invite him to join Seals Ambulance. Since then, Larry has served as an operations supervisor and, most recently, as a frontline EMT providing 9-1-1 services to the City of Franklin, where he continues to deliver compassionate care to every patient he encounters.
Larry’s call to service extends beyond EMS. For nearly three decades, he has also worked part-time with a local funeral home, offering comfort and support to families in their moments of greatest need. Whether responding to emergencies, leading his colleagues, or consoling those experiencing loss, Larry’s empathy and professionalism never waver.
Andre Joel Bower
Andre Joel Bower has distinguished himself as a leader on LifeCare Medical Transport’s Critical Care Transport (CCT) team, combining clinical excellence with a deep commitment to mentorship and patient care. Serving as both a Critical Care Paramedic and Drug Control Officer, Joel was instrumental in establishing and piloting LifeCare’s narcotics program, earning multiple commendations for his innovative approach and dedication to safety and quality. Joel also oversaw and was a primary contributor to the establishment of LifeCare’s first set of clinical guidelines and competency-based annual education initiatives.
Bower’s advanced clinical knowledge has been an important component in training and developing new CCT providers, helping expand LifeCare’s program, and creating new career opportunities within EMS. His patience and guidance foster professional growth among his colleagues while ensuring that patients across Virginia have access to the highest level of care during transport. Through his leadership, Joel continues to raise the bar for excellence in critical care, serving as an inspiration to the EMS community.
Anthony Arrigo
Anthony Arrigo’s journey in EMS began as a volunteer driver for a local ambulance service, where he quickly discovered his passion for emergency medical care. After earning his EMT certification, Anthony dedicated himself to mastering every step of the profession, advancing through his training with intention and commitment until becoming a paramedic, a role in which he has saved countless lives.
Beyond his clinical skill, Anthony found a calling in teaching and mentoring. As a preceptor, he has guided and inspired countless EMT and Paramedic students, helping them develop into confident, compassionate professionals. His influence extends far beyond patient care; he has cultivated a legacy of mentorship and leadership within the EMS community.
Anthony’s passion for leadership grew as he transitioned into a supervisory role, where he excelled at motivating and supporting his team while instilling pride in patient care and professionalism. Now, as the newly named Operations Manager, Anthony continues to drive positive changes, strengthening employee relations, boosting morale, and fostering a culture of family and support within the organization.
Although he no longer serves full-time on the front lines, Anthony remains deeply committed to advancing his lifelong passion for EMS. His dedication to patients, colleagues, and the profession exemplifies the very best of EMS leadership.
Allen Steele
Allen Steele’s EMS journey is a testament to his unwavering dedication to serving others. His career began in 1996 when he joined Lake Robinson Rescue as a volunteer, igniting a passion that would shape his life’s path. After earning his EMT certification in 1997, Allen embarked on a professional career that would span decades and cross continents.
In 2004, Allen’s commitment to service led him to join the United States Army as a Medic. He served his country with distinction for over a decade, including tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. These experiences honed his medical skills and instilled in him a deep understanding of the importance of calm and effective care in high-pressure situations.
Upon returning to civilian life in 2015, Allen brought his experience to Medshore Ambulance where he continued his work as an EMT and took on the role of Field Training Officer, sharing his knowledge and mentoring the next generation of EMS professionals.
Today, Allen Steele serves as an EMT Field Training Officer for Guardian Ambulance Service in Florence, South Carolina. His journey from volunteer to military medic to civilian EMT and trainer demonstrates a lifelong commitment to emergency medical services and public safety. Allen’s career is characterized by continuous growth, adaptability, and dedication to helping others in their most vulnerable moments. His experience in diverse and challenging environments and his passion for teaching make him an invaluable asset to the EMS community and a worthy nominee for the American Ambulance Association Stars of Life Award.
Robin Smith
Robin “Smitty” Smith has been an invaluable member of the First Call Ambulance team since 2015. Starting as a Paramedic in the field, Smitty’s commitment and passion for EMS quickly became evident, leading him to transition into a pivotal role in training and education. Today, he oversees the training of all employees, with a special focus on leading our EMT Academy.
Under Smitty’s leadership, the EMT Academy has flourished. His dedication to perfecting the art of teaching has resulted in outcomes that far exceed national standards. His last two academy classes achieved an impressive 100% pass rate on the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam, a remarkable feat that speaks to his skill as an educator. These results, well above the national average, reflect not just Smitty’s ability to prepare his students for exams but also his dedication to shaping highly competent providers who are ready to serve their communities.
Smitty’s impact extends beyond the classroom. His unwavering commitment to his students’ success has led to the creation of a new generation of EMTs who are prepared, confident, and skilled in providing lifesaving care. His passion for education and his genuine care for his students make him a standout leader in our organization.
When he’s not guiding the next wave of EMS professionals, Smitty enjoys relaxing on the golf course and cherishing time with his wife. Chad Smith
Chad Smith’s dedication to emergency medical services spans over two decades. He began his career as a Paramedic at Kunkel Ambulance in April 2003. Chad has demonstrated exceptional leadership and versatility throughout his tenure, progressing through roles including Field Paramedic, Training Officer, and Supervisor. In November 2016, he was promoted to Director of Operations Support, a title that understates his critical role as second-in-command at Kunkel Ambulance Service.
In his current position, Chad oversees a wide range of responsibilities crucial to the organization’s success. He serves as the primary point of contact for field supervisors and collaborates closely with corporate IT to manage technology issues across both Operations and Billing departments. Chad’s expertise extends to overseeing CAD systems, electronic charting, and controlled substances reporting, ensuring seamless operations and compliance.
Beyond his operational duties, Chad has maintained his New York State Certified Instructor Coordinator credentials, sharing his knowledge and field experience to train hundreds of successful NYS EMT candidates. His commitment to the EMS community is further exemplified by his role as Chair of the Midstate Regional Emergency Medical Services Council. Chad’s willingness to tackle any challenge, regardless of whether it falls within his official job description and his round-the-clock availability, makes him an invaluable asset to Kunkel Ambulance and a worthy recipient of the Stars of Life recognition.
Faith Shuff
Faith’s journey to her current role as a Paramedic Supervisor at National EMS is a testament to her unwavering dedication and exceptional leadership. Joining the team in 2020 amidst the challenges of the pandemic, Faith didn’t just adapt; she thrived, quickly becoming an indispensable member of the organization.
Faith tackles every task with equal enthusiasm, a smile that never fades, and a can-do attitude. Her willingness to take on any challenge and see it through to completion has made her the go-to person for her colleagues. Faith’s calm demeanor in high-pressure situations is infectious. She brings a sense of tranquility to even the most chaotic patient care environments, working through complex scenarios with professionalism and positivity.

Recently, Faith demonstrated her exceptional crisis management skills when faced with a combative patient suffering from a seizure disorder. While others at the scene grew agitated, Faith maintained her composure, redirecting the focus to patient care. Her ability to stay calm and lead in such a high-pressure situation led to a successful outcome, a true testament to her leadership in action.
Beyond her on-the-field excellence, Faith has taken on additional responsibilities that benefit the entire organization. She recently spearheaded a hiring initiative, bringing fresh talent into National EMS. Additionally, she played a crucial role in ensuring company-wide compliance with annual N-95 mask recertification.

Amanda McQuistian
Amanda McQuistian embodies exceptional leadership in emergency medical services, evidenced by her 14-year career and current role as a Paramedic and Director of Operations at LifeCare Medical Transports. With seven years in leadership positions, Amanda has consistently elevated patient care and organizational excellence standards. Her hands-on approach and commitment to treating all tasks equally have fostered a culture of professionalism permeating every level of the organization. As an education coordinator, Amanda ensures her staff maintains certifications while providing additional training opportunities, demonstrating her dedication to nurturing the next generation of EMS professionals.
Amanda leads from the front, playing an active role in the organization’s everyday running by putting boots on the ground. Amanda’s academic achievements complement her practical experience in EMS. She holds an Associate of Applied Science in Emergency Medical Services and teaches at Virginia Peninsula Community College. Her Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration and minor in Management from Old Dominion University uniquely position her to drive innovation and excellence in EMS.
Amanda’s commitment to community engagement extends beyond her professional achievements. She captains a beach volleyball team and organizes charity tournaments for various causes. Her recent volunteer work at the National EMS Memorial Service is a testament to her compassion for the EMS community. Eric Lumpkin
Since joining Central EMS in 2008, Eric Lumpkin has become an invaluable asset to the team. As Dispatch Supervisor and Training Officer, Eric has revolutionized the company’s training programs, ensuring both efficient onboarding and continuous education for all staff. His leadership style—marked by open communication and a commitment to improvement—has created a positive and productive work environment.
Eric’s dedication goes far beyond his official duties. He regularly volunteers for special operations, from repairing ambulances to participating in hurricane evacuations. His willingness to take on any challenge has made him indispensable to the team, and his actions have earned him a reputation as a role model, inspiring his colleagues to strive for excellence.

Carla Landrum
Carla Landrum joined the Puckett EMS family in March 2012 as an EMT, bringing with her a deep compassion and a heart dedicated to serving others. From her first day, Carla displayed the work ethic and character that defines an EMS professional. In 2016, she obtained her Paramedic license, and in 2023, she was promoted to Field Training Officer. Carla has earned numerous commendations for her excellent customer service and was awarded Puckett EMS’ highest honor, “Employee of the Year,” in 2023.
Outside of work, Carla enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband, Matt, and their three daughters, Haylie (16), Addison (14), and Stella (11). Her love for nature is reflected in her hobbies of camping and kayaking. She also has a soft spot for animals, especially her goats and chickens. Carla’s greatest pride is her children, all of whom are honor students, with the two eldest being members of the local high school marching band.
Carla is well-respected by her peers and is known for her exceptional critical decision-making skills, which make her an outstanding FTO. In February, Carla was the first on the scene of an active shooter incident at a local high school, where two victims were critically injured. She worked seamlessly with a unified command structure, performing rapid triage and transport roles with textbook precision. Despite working in the “hot zone” under intense pressure, Carla maintained her composure and successfully triaged, treated, and transported both victims within five minutes of arriving on the scene. Both victims fully recovered.

Lillie Jamison
Lillie’s expertise is vast, and she is an invaluable resource to her colleagues. With tri-state licensure as a Paramedic in Arkansas, Tennessee, and Mississippi, she is equipped to provide care across a wide geographic area. This unique qualification enhances her ability to serve multiple communities and respond to diverse medical emergencies.
A key area where Lillie excels is in mentorship and coaching. She has played an instrumental role in improving employee onboarding, retention, and morale, using her talent for active listening and her ability to connect with staff across generations. Her efforts have made her a role model for effective communication in a diverse workforce, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment.
In addition to her operational roles, Lillie is a vital member of the company’s compliance team. She is responsible for understanding and implementing corporate compliance initiatives across the Priority family of companies, contributing significantly to quality assurance and risk minimization efforts.

Kayleen Harding
Kayleen Harding, originally from Rocky Boy, Montana, began her EMT journey in 2022. After her family relocated to the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming, Kayleen felt a strong calling to give back to her new community. In November 2022, she joined the local EMS team and has since dedicated herself to improving communication between tribal members and EMS professionals.
Kayleen understands the crucial role that effective communication plays in fostering trust and collaboration across cultures. Her commitment to bridging these gaps was highlighted when she organized a booth at the Eastern Shoshone Pow Wow, where she showcased her skills as an athletic trainer. By finding common ground between the two cultures, she secured EMS standby services for the event. Kayleen used the opportunity to educate both tribal members and her colleagues on cultural differences, promoting mutual understanding and respect.
In addition to her work as an EMT, Kayleen is pursuing a degree in Kinesiology, further demonstrating her commitment to enhancing her skills and expanding her ability to serve her community.
Steve Emery
For more than four decades, Steve Emery has set the gold standard in Emergency Medical Services, with a career that spans from 1978 to 2024. His journey, which began with his EMT certification through the Lawrence Volunteer Fire Department, has actively shaped the landscape of EMS in Indiana.
Steve retired from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Fire Department in January 2024, marking the culmination of a career defined by professionalism and grace under pressure. During his tenure with Aid Ambulance, Rural Metro, and most recently Seals Ambulance, Steve became a mentor, guide, and a pillar of reliability for those around him. One early incident captures his dedication: despite his wife going into labor, Steve offered to continue his 24-hour shift until a replacement arrived, demonstrating an unshakable commitment to his team while still being present for his family when his child was born.
Since joining Seals Ambulance in 2014, Steve has fostered a culture of camaraderie and support. His approachability and willingness to assist have earned him the respect and admiration of his peers, making him a beloved figure in the EMS community.
Jason Cooke
Jason Cooke’s career in emergency medical services illustrates growth, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to public service. In 1994, at 15, he joined Lamar Rescue Squad as a driver, which sparked a pivotal career in public service. In 2000, Jason earned his Paramedic certification, marking the beginning of a remarkable path in EMS.
During his tenure as a paramedic with Darlington and Lee Counties, Jason’s exceptional patient care skills and natural aptitude for leadership were recognized by his supervisors, propelling him into the role of Assistant Director of Darlington County EMS. Concurrent with working full-time in EMS, he served the community further as a deputy and police officer for Darlington County Sheriff’s Office and Hartsville and Lamar Police Departments.
Jason’s career reached a significant milestone in 2008 as he entered the Director of Access Health position at McLeod Health. This role showcased Jason’s ability to think beyond traditional EMS boundaries as he orchestrated a care coordination network among community partners in the Pee Dee area. His mission was clear: efficiently guiding at-risk patients to appropriate healthcare providers, ultimately improving health outcomes. This innovative approach to patient care management earned Jason recognition as an emerging industry leader.
Jason’s reputation for excellence and his knack for large-scale system management led him to Priority Ambulance in 2018. As Vice President of Operations, Jason oversees Guardian Ambulance Service and Medshore Ambulance Service, the largest privately owned EMS system in South Carolina. Under his guidance, these operations have become models of efficiency, setting new standards for emergency medical services in the state.
What sets Jason apart is his visionary approach coupled with a ‘lead by example’ philosophy.
