Mark Dressel

Mark Dressel is a dedicated Emergency Medical Technician with Hunter’s Ambulance who has distinguished himself within the broader Hartford HealthCare EMS Network.

Known for his unparalleled commitment to EMS, Mark is consistently the first to volunteer for additional shifts and offer his assistance, embodying the very spirit of teamwork that is so essential in mobile healthcare.

Beyond his work ethic, what truly sets Mark apart is his exemplary bedside manner. Patients feel at ease under his care, a sentiment echoed by their families and affirmed by numerous commendations. Moreover, his colleagues hold him in high regard, a testament to the great rapport he has fostered within the team.

In recognizing Mark with the Star of Life Award, we honor not just his technical proficiency, but the warmth and camaraderie he brings to every interaction.

Alison Hoffner

From the moment Alison Hoffner joined the Hunter’s Ambulance team in May 2010, fresh out of Paramedic school, she has been nothing short of exceptional. Bringing with her over a decade of experience as a healthcare tech, Alison seamlessly transitioned her experience and knowledge into her role within the Hartford HealthCare EMS Network.

Alison leads by example. She lends her time and expertise to observing EMT students, enriching their learning experiences. Her dedication to patient care and commitment to excellence are frequently acknowledged.

Alison is a regular recipient of commendations, not just from the patients she cares for but also from their families and the staff of the facilities we work with.

Hunter’s Ambulance proudly honors Alison Hoffner’s service, skill, and expertise and recognizes her as a 2023 Star of Life.

Aaron Westervelt

Paramedic Aaron Westervelt, an Operations Supervisor for American Ambulance within the Hartford HealthCare EMS Network, boasts 14 years of service, including 12 years as an EMT before he progressed to the Paramedic level.

As an Operations Supervisor, Aaron is known for his calm demeanor and a consistent willingness to assist. His tenure as a Paramedic showcases solid clinical decision-making. Esteemed by colleagues, Aaron’s role within American Ambulance and the community of Norwich is both notable and appreciated.

In addition to his professional commitments at American, Aaron also serves as a volunteer Fire Chief in Laurel Hill, Norwich, CT. 

American Ambulance honors Aaron as an excellent Paramedic,  well-respected colleague, and skilled supervisor.

Terezia Nutt

American Ambulance, a proud entity of the Hartford HealthCare EMS Network, is honored to highlight the exceptional contributions of EMT Terezia “Tess” Nutt for the Stars of Life Awards. Tess began her journey with us in 2019, when she earned her EMT certification, and she has consistently showcased an unwavering commitment to excellence and growth. This fall, Tess furthered her dedication to the field by adding an EMS Instructor certification to her repertoire.

Beyond her certifications, what truly sets Tess apart is her profound impact as both an emergency dispatcher and an EMT. On a daily basis, she navigates the complexities and stressors of these roles with immense dignity, showcasing a commendable blend of professionalism, empathy, and resilience. Tess’s interactions with her patients are rooted in genuine care and respect, a trait that echoes in her relationships with colleagues as well. Her communication is always precise, thoughtful, and right on point, serving as an exemplar for both new and seasoned team members.

In every role Tess undertakes—EMT, dispatcher, or instructor—she exemplifies a true EMS professional. American Ambulance is proud to honor her dedication, skill, and expertise.

Nicole Piazza

Nicole Piazza is being honored for displaying great skill and calm in several pediatric cardiac arrest situations, and for responding to calls even though she was off-duty. In one recent event, Nicole was on her way home when she heard that there was a multiple shooting in Hartford. Even though she was off-duty, Nicole did not hesitate to go to this call, which was in a dangerous and unsafe area. Once there, she contacted the crews involved and provided excellent communication to support the EMS effort. The scene was quite hectic and yet, Nicole remained calm. She was praised for her service that day and for the many other times she showed up to help when she was not on duty.

Nicole also serves as the Chair of her operation’s Risk and Safety Committee—a role she takes very seriously. She is not only passionate about the safety of her patients, but also the safety of her teammates. It is not uncommon for her to stay late to give support to crew members after they have returned from a difficult call.

So, whether she is training a new hire, providing care to her patients, or advocating for her coworkers, Nicole prides herself on being the best that she can be.

 

Matthew Skiffington

Matthew Skiffington began his EMS career at Hunter’s Ambulance in 2009 as an EMT. He then achieved his Paramedic license in February 2013. After excelling in his field, Matthew was promoted to Field Training Officer.

Matthew’s drive has always left him seeking new challenges and opportunities. Recently, his passion for sharing his knowledge drove Matt to become a Paramedic Field instructor. Matthew’s continued dedication to the betterment of his fellow employees, students, and patients has made a profound impact on everyone around him. He consistently demonstrates strong clinical skills, asserts himself as a leader, and provides the very best of care. His dedication to his peers, patients, and the EMS profession sets Matthew apart in his field.

Matthew was recently chosen as a Hartford Healthcare Award of Excellence recipient.

 

Ian Pieper

Ian Pieper began his EMS career at Hunters Ambulance in 2014. In addition to his current service as a combat medic specialist in the Army National Guard, Ian quickly established himself as a dedicated, hardworking stand out employee at Hunter’s. His personality shined, bringing out the best of all those around him. Ian’s skillset was matched only by his dedication to his patients and colleagues.

Furthering his work in EMS, Ian was then promoted to Field Training Officer. In this role, he has bestowed his vast knowledge in the training and excellence of new Emergency Medical Technicians. Ian produces an energy amongst his peers, inspiring others to excel in the profession as he has. His leadership, compassion, dedication and willingness teach others, coupled with his passion for the mobile healthcare profession, makes Ian truly embody all that is best about EMS.

Ian was recently chosen as the Hunter’s Ambulance Service EMS 2019 Distinguished Service Award recipient.

 

Marcello Miranda

Marcello Miranda began his EMS career at Hunter’s in 2005. In addition to serving as a Sargent in the Army National Guard, his commitment to excellence in his profession is demonstrated by his role as a Field Training Officer.

Marcello carefully guides new hires through the orientation process and takes an active role in training EMT students. His willingness and dedication to build the skills of new EMTs has proven to be essential for others to succeed. Marcello’s leadership qualities and the manner with which he uses his field experiences position him as a standout among his peers. His care for his patients exemplifies the skilled care provider that he is. He is a strong leader and willing to help his peers or anyone in need.

Marcello was recently chosen as a Hartford Healthcare -Award of Excellence recipient.

 

Nicole Mazzone

Nicole Mazzone was hired in 2013 as a Non-Emergency Telecommunicator. She excelled very quickly in her duties and transferred to EMS Dispatch in 2015.

Exhibiting a desire to conquer further challenges, Nicole worked diligently to obtain the certifications necessary to transition from Call Receiver to Dispatcher. Nicole continued to show her proficiency and leadership by becoming a Field Training Officer and inspiring our new Dispatchers to strive for excellence. Her most recent certification in Emergency Medical Dispatch Quality Assurance is a critical role in maintaining our center’s IAED accreditation.

Nicole stands out as a leader among her peers. Nicole exhibits extreme professionalism under pressure. She is efficient, clear minded, calculated, fair, knowledgeable, and takes pride in every aspect of each job that she performs. Nicole is a true example of what a leader embodies through her dedication to her profession.

Nicole was recently chosen as the Hunter’s Ambulance Service 2019 Distinguished Service Award recipient for Telecommunications.

 

Michael Horbachuk

Michael Horbachuk began his EMS journey in 2009 as an EMT for Hunters working part-time while balancing his full-time position as a high school teacher. Michael would share his knowledge freely and with great enthusiasm and quickly established himself as a source of knowledge for many of his peers. 

Michael transitioned to full time, then completed Paramedic school in 2017. He has since quickly established himself as a very skilled care giver. His congenial personality makes him a quick friend to his peers and brings comfort to his patients.  

Michael has become an EMS Instructor and effectively combines his field experience with his talents as an educator and is a positive force in the classroom. He keeps his knowledge and skills sharp both by teaching the next generation of EMTs and by serving as a leader in the Field training officer program.

Through his efforts, care, skill, and passion, Michael Horbachuk is setting the standard for professionalism in our industry. Michael was recently chosen as the Hunter’s Ambulance Service EMS 2019 Distinguished Service Award recipient.

 

Kelly Augeri

Kelly Augeri began her EMS career at Hunter’s in 1999 and achieved her paramedic license 2008. She also served in the Army National Guard and the Westfield Fire Department, which sharpened her natural leadership skills.

Kelly takes charge on challenging scenes while rendering the best of patient care. Kelly is well respected by her peers and fellow agencies. She consistently challenges herself and her colleagues to be better clinicians, patient advocates, and leaders. She is always willing to help others whether by taking on another call or being an encouraging voice in a time of need.

Kelly embodies all of what this profession should be. In addition to her selection for Stars of Life, Kelly was recently chosen for a Hartford Healthcare Award of Excellence.

Timothy Lambert

Timothy Lambert completed his Paramedic field internship at AMR’s Hartford operation, and then joined the team in early 2018.

Last May, just two months into his career as a Paramedic, Tim and his partner responded to what they thought would be a routine medical call involving an emotionally disturbed patient. However, when Tim and his partner arrived on scene, they found a severely injured police officer. The officer had been stabbed multiple times in the neck and was losing blood quickly. Every second mattered. Tim and his partner quickly packaged the police officer for transport, and Tim began treating her life-threatening injuries at once. They arrived at the trauma center within six minutes.

The officer successfully recovered from her injuries. Tim’s rapid response and expert care in the first few critical minutes of the incident were key to the positive patient outcome.

 

Jo-Ann White-Hall

Jo-Ann White-Hall joined Hunter’s Ambulance Service in 2008 as an EMT. She has been actively involved with community events and has continued to encourage interest in the field of EMS (Emergency Medical Services). She has received several commendations for her dedication to achieve positive patient outcomes. Our Management Team along with other responding agencies have remarked on her ability to coordinate a unified response for the welfare of those around her and within her care. She has often taken time to provide feedback for improved performance at multiple events. Jo-Ann was recently recognized by supervision for her performance at a standby that required the triage of approximately 20 plus persons. She assessed the situation establishing treatment for those who were medically ill while activating the system which resulted in the declaration of an MCI (Mass Casualty Incident) and transport of multiple patients. Multiple accolades from supervisors and the public prove she is an asset to our EMS team. She communicates with event leadership to establish expectations. Her ability to work with and follow procedures has been reported from multiple venues such as the Durham and Berlin Fair EMS response providers. Jo-Ann is being honored as a Star of Life for her professionalism and dedication. In December 2013, Jo-Ann was honored and awarded the 2013 Hunter’s Ambulance Distinguished Service Awards for EMS-Emergency Medical Technician. Hunter’s Ambulance is privileged to have such a dedicated person as part of our team.”

Gordon Reed

Gordon Reed joined Hunter’s Ambulance Service in 2006 as an EMT-B; and worked in that capacity for 5 years. He then rejoined our team a year and a half ago as a Paramedic. Since Gordon’s return, we have received multiple commendations from patients, family members and local fire and EMS departments on his exemplary performance in the field. His patient care, professionalism and the comfort he provides are often noted. Gordon is dependable, caring and is well deserving of recognition. Commendations from patients all read the same “professional, courteous, respectful”. Patients appreciate his care and concern during stressful times. His commendations include the Chief of Durham EMS calling to state that Gordon “performed phenomenally, and although the outcome was not successful, he was impressed with the superior work performed by Gordon.” Also, the Chaplin from MidState Medical Center expressed his sincere thanks to Gordon for his participation in the incident and diffusion from a tragic multiple patient motor vehicle accident involving the deaths of two young children. The Chaplin was impressed by Gordon’s maturity and he recognized Gordon’s dedication and commitment to caring for others including his colleagues. Gordon is being honored as a Star of Life for his professionalism and dedication. In December 2013, Gordon was honored and awarded the 2013 Hunter’s Ambulance Distinguished Service Award for EMS- Paramedic. Hunter’s Ambulance is privileged to have such a dedicated person as part of our team.”

Salvatore DeLucia

Sal DeLucia began his career in EMS in Vermont then moved back home to Connecticut where he continued his career as an Emergency Medical Technician first for Flanagan Ambulance and then for New Haven Ambulance Service in New Haven, Conn. As a dedicated, hardworking EMT, Sal advanced to the Paramedic level in 1988. His strong commitment to patient care enables him to mentor many of his colleagues and he is widely recognized as one of the most knowledgeable, committed Paramedics in the region. He always demonstrates the AMR core values while anticipating a patient’s needs, safety and comfort. As a Paramedic and Field Training Officer, Sal has inspired many of his peers while dedicating himself to his profession. He regularly attends local municipal emergency management meetings. He presented a plan to the community of Orange, CT to adopt a “Heart Safe Community.” Sal worked with local businesses, volunteer agencies and business leaders to purchase CPR assist devices for the town. He then conducted CPR training for the town’s employees and EMS providers. At a recent standby community event, a patron went into cardiac arrest in front of Sal and the EMS team. Sal successfully guided the team in patient care, providing early CPR and ALS protocols resulting in a CPR save and the patient ultimately discharged from the hospital.”

Rosemary O’Keefe-Kirschner

Rosemary O’Keefe-Kirschner truly embodies the best of AMR-New Haven. She is its heart and soul, and there is not an employee who has not been positively affected by Rosemary. She constantly looks for ways lend a helping hand to her coworkers and her community.

Rosemary is the kind of person who is always looking out for those around her, no matter what she herself may be going through personally. She is truly a selfless individual who will stop at nothing to help someone in their time of need.

The entire New Haven staff looks up to Rosemary. She is the Paramedic colleagues go to for advice, mentorship, or to discuss a difficult call.

Rosemary has been honing her skills and serving this community for 39 years. In an interesting parallel, these skills which were recently demonstrated when she had a code-save of a 39-year-old woman. Thanks to Rosemary’s knowledge and experience, this young mother of three returned home to her children.

 

Heather Roy

Heather Roy is the epitome of the axiom “don’t judge a book by its cover.” Heather is a “pint size” provider that out-performs her larger size peers.

Heather was hired in September 2006 within our Special Transportation Division transporting students with special needs. In March 2007, she transferred to the EMS Division as an EMT. Heather excelled in this position and has great respect for her peers, partners, hospital staff, and fellow first responders.

Heather is truly a patient advocate. She surfaces issues for patients that may not be of a medical nature, but are impacting their quality of life, so that they can be addressed.

Always willing to improve herself through reflection after each call she completes, she was the perfect candidate for a Field Training Officer position. Heather has great interactions with the new employees she is assigned. In particular, because of her solid technique, Heather has become the company’s ”lifting guru” for any new employee needing additional lifting assistance in this area.

Heather has also recently accepted and trained to become one of Hunter’s first Certified Car Seat Technicians. She provides proper installation and instruction of car seats for those in need in our community.

Heather is a positive role model for our EMS staff and a great advocate for our organization.

Dennis Dougan

Dennis Dougan was hired as an EMT on December 15, 2008. While working for Hunter’s, Dennis continued his education by going to Paramedic school. In November 2011, Dennis was granted his Connecticut State Paramedic license, then obtained his medical direction in January 2012.

Dennis is a solid Paramedic who exercises self-control and solid scene management, bringing calmness to the most chaotic scenes. Dennis has been able to pass some of this along through his precepting of new Paramedics. We have received positive feedback from those he has mentored and evaluated through the process.

Dennis has had several commendations from the public. Here are a couple of excerpts:

  • “We would like to thank you very much for all that you did for my brother-in-law.”
  • “The treatment (both physical and emotional) that we received from the Hunter’s Paramedics was exceptional! These Paramedics provided us with the expert care while also keeping us informed of our situation.”
  • “Being from out of state with no family or friends close by, the smart thinking of this team was a comfort and a true blessing.”
  • “You have two of the finest human beings working for you, and I just wanted to take a moment to tell you how much we all appreciate them in their kind heartedness.”
  • “Your crew should be complimented for the manner in which they performed, especially in the face of a very difficult task.”

Dennis is a fantastic representative of what EMS is about and we are proud to have him as part of our team.

Michael Turcio

A veteran of the War in Iraq, AMR Paramedic Supervisor Mike Turcio is passionate about supporting and recognizing others who have served in the armed forces. Mike organized a ceremony last year to honor veterans working in his operation and designed a special challenge coin for veterans in Connecticut’s EMS industry. Mike also regularly leads efforts to create and send care packages to soldiers deployed overseas.

Mental health for first responders is another of Mike’s passions. Mike has been part of several panel discussions related to identification and treatment of first responder stress, and has organized team meetings with Yale’s Critical Incident Stress Management Team. Mike makes a point to check in with colleagues who have responded to critical incidents and to connect them with the initial and ongoing support they need.

Daniel Jackson

Daniel Jackson has been employed with Hunter’s Ambulance Service since November 2002. Dan joined Hunter’s as an EMT-IV, then later successfully progressed to obtain his Paramedic license in June of 2003.

Dan possesses many qualities that are appreciated by our organization. When his supervisors were asked to describe him, they all had the same positive response: “Dan is extremely dedicated to his job, and his patients”. His is known to be “respected by
patients, peers, and supervisors alike.”

In addition, Dan is a Paramedic Field Instructor (PFI) and has been critical in precepting and assisting our new Paramedic employees to obtain medical control. Dan’s recommendations while acting as a PFI are valued and trusted by all. He takes the time to critically evaluate each and every call to ensure the best in patient care.

Dan is being honored as a Star of Life for his proficiency and dedication. Hunter’s Ambulance is privileged to have such a committed member on our team.
